The Depiction of the National Liberation Movement Led by Syrym Batyr in Kazakh Literature

At the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, the Russian Empire’s colonization policy in Kazakh lands intensified. The first major uprisings against colonialism lasted for many years. One of the most significant national liberation uprisings was the movement led by Syrym Datuly. The aim of this article is to analyze the representation in fiction of the national liberation movement of 1783-1797, led by Datuly, who headed the struggle against the tsarist colonial policy. His heroism and bravery became the subject of historical poems by folk poets. The poet Gumar Karash celebrated him in the historical poem «Syrym Batyr», while Ygylman Shorekuly depicted his image with artistic depth in the epic poem «Isatay – Makhambet». The body of legends and historical poems about the batyr was enriched by Gabit Musrepov’s historical play «Legacy for the Future». Moreover, the episode concerning Syrym Batyr’s war belt in Musirepov’s novel «Ulpan» further deepens and enlivens the hero’s character. His image continued to be artistically developed in the play «Syrym Batyr» by Rakhymzhan Otarbayev and in the novel «Time of Turmoil» by renowned Kazhyghali Mukhanbetkaliuly. In addition, several journalistic and scholarly articles were written about Datuly. The objective of the study is, through the analysis of the mentioned works, to examine the artistic interpretation of historical truth as reflected in fiction depicting the national liberation movement led by Datuly, which holds an important place in our history. The relevance of the research lies in its contribution to assessing the role of historical works in revitalizing national memory. The article provides a comparative analysis of works about the national liberation movement led by Datuly and historical figures who fought for the country’s independence. The materials presented in the article can be used in elective courses on the history of Kazakh literature.
