Cognitive and Discursive Features of the Category of Adjectives in the Kazakh Language (Based on Literary Text)

This article is devoted to the analysis of cognitive-discursive and pragmatic features of the category of adjectives in Kazakh fiction. The main goal of the study is to determine the semantic, expressive, and evaluative functions of adjectives and adverbials in literary texts. To achieve this goal, the following objectives were set: to systematize the use of adjectives in literary texts; to determine the frequency and function of qualitative, intensifying, and comparative forms of expression; and to describe the role of the category of expression in creating the character's image, conveying the emotional situation, and shaping the author's evaluation.
The stories of O. Bokay “Kamshyger”, D. Ashimkhanuly “Kudaisyzdar”, and R. Mukanova “Mangilik Bala Beine” were used as the object of research. The study used descriptive, textual analysis, cognitive-discursive, and functional-pragmatic methods. The analysis revealed that the category of adjectives is more of an expression of a threshold, absolute state of quality, a deepening of psychological and philosophical content, rather than a grammatical comparison in artistic discourse.
The results of the study showed that qualitative adjectives are prioritized in these stories, and comparative forms of pronouns are rarely used in literary texts. It has been proven that the intensifying meaning is mainly realized not through morphological features, but through intensifying elements and lexical repetition. It has also been established that the rich forms of adjectives serve as the primary linguistic means of expressing the inner psychological state of the character, social pressure, and the author's assessment.
The scientific significance of the study lies in the comprehensive description of the category of adjectives from the perspective of functional grammar and discourse theory. The findings complement research in the field of literary text linguistics and cognitive orientation in Kazakh linguistics. The practical value of the study lies in its potential application in the analysis of literary texts.
