Women's Creativity in Kazakh Folklore: Gender Identity and the Formation of Genres

The article analyzes texts and genres created by women in Kazakh oral folk literature. The stereotype that literature, considered part of intellectual and creative work, is a domain solely occupied by men is contested, and materials assessing the works of female authors published in the press are analyzed. Additionally, the article examines the texts of Kazakh folk songs created by female authors from the 100-volume edition of the folklore of Kazakhstan, part of the state project “Madeni mura” (“Cultural heritage”), published in the “Babalar sözi” (“Word of ancestors”) series. The article also provides an analysis explaining why these texts are attributed to women, with the help of tables. The motives and reasons for women writing texts in folklore works are discussed. The texts of magical words spoken during rituals such as jarysqazan, qursaqshashu, tusaukesu, and besikke salu were also created by women. A comparative analysis is conducted based on Simone de Beauvoir's research on mythological female deities and the portrayal of divine women in Kazakh folklore. Examples from the works of Ybyray Altynsarin, Shokan Ualikhanov, and Ahmet Baitursynov are provided, concerning the roles of women and men in performing customs and traditions in Kazakh society, which can be regarded as examples of gender analysis, even if not traditionally labeled as such in scientific contexts.
